General Cultural Practices

Watermelon field trials were grown using the ‘plasticulture’ system which uses black plastic mulch over the plant bed. Drip tape was laid underneath the plastic mulch in order to supply the crop with water and fertilizer (often referred to as ‘fertigation’). Pesticides used in these field trials were chemicals labeled for commercial production of that crop, (2015 North Carolina Agricultural Chemicals Manual).

Watermelon Cultural Practices for 2015 Cultivar Trial, Central Crops Research Station, Clayton, NC

Introduction

The watermelon production season was generally a very good one for most North Carolina growers. Growing conditions were mainly favorable, the exception being a two week very high temperature, drought period experienced in mid-June. Otherwise, timely rains for producers growing on bare ground resulted in exceptional yields. Acreage harvested in North Carolina has remained relatively steady over the past three seasons (5,667 acres) with 5,800 acres harvested in 2015 (USDA data). Yield per acre averaged 31,000 pounds, which was near the average nationally (30,300 pounds/acre). Prices were extremely high for North Carolina growers in 2015 reaching 21 to 22 cents per pound at their peak. This translated into $32.364 million, up $18.504 million from 2014. North Carolina produced 5% of the U.S. acreage which totaled 115,750. North Carolina ranked 7th in among states in acreage harvested, but ranked 6th in value comprising 6.7% of the total U.S. value which totaled $483,003 million.

Materials and Methods

Once all seed were obtained, they were planted into 72 cell Poly trays to grow transplants (Hummert Int.; Earth City, MO). Seeds of standard size cultigens were sown on 15 April 2015. The planting medium used was “Fine Germinating Mix”, a commercial soilless mix (Carolina Greenhouse and Soil Company; Kinston, NC). Approximately 3 weeks after seeding, transplants were placed in a “hardening” greenhouse for about one week before being established in the field. Standard size triploids were established in the field on 20 May 2015. Telone C-17 fumigant (application rate 10 gal/ac) was incorporated into the soil through soil injection on 5 November 2014. Preplant fertilizer was applied through a broadcast application across the entire area to be planted at a rate of 30 lb/ac N and 80 lb/ac. Plant beds were rowed up after fertilizer was incorporated. Black polyethylene plastic (0.70 mil thick high density plastic film, 48 inches wide; B.B. Hobbs, Clinton, NC) was laid on 15 May 2015. Plot size for standard triploid size watermelons was 1 row, 10 plants per plot, 25 feet long with 10 foot alleys between plots. In most cases, plots with missing plants were replanted approximately 7 days after planting to achieve 100% plant stand. ‘SP-6’ was the sole pollinizer source for the 2015 growing season. Pollinizers were interplanted between plants 1 and 2; 5 and 6; and 9 and 10. Row middles were 10 feet for all watermelon types and in-row spacing was 2.5 feet for standard size triploid watermelons. Drip tape (NETAFIM, 12 inch spacing, 0.24 gph; NETAFIM, Tel Aviv, Israel) was installed underneath the plastic mulch and was utilized to fertigate the crop throughout the growing season. The following herbicides were applied to row middles on 19 May 2015; Gramoxone SL (3pt/ac), Prefar (5qt/ac) and Curbit (4pt/ac). Coragen (5 oz/50 galH20) insecticide and 20-20-20 starter fertilizer (1 lb/50 gal H20) were applied in solution at transplanting on 20 May 2015. Liquid fertilizer (12 gal) with a 4-0-8 analysis, was applied through the drip tape on 3 June 2015. Row middles were treated on 5 June 2015 using Gramoxone SL (2/3oz/gal or 2 qt/ac). Fertigation was initiated two weeks after planting and applied weekly throughout 2the growing season. A total of 130 lb/ac N and 261 lb/ac K2O was applied via fertigation throughout the growing season. Cumulative totals of applied fertilizer for the growing season were 160, 0, and 341lb/ac of N, P2O5, and K2O, respectively. Soil tests indicated soil Phosphorous levels were adequate, therefore, with the exception of liquid fertilizer used at transplanting, no additional P2O5 was applied. Insecticide spray applications were applied weekly as a preventative measure beginning 3 June and repeated on the following dates (10, 17, and 24 June; 1, 8, 15, and 22 July; and 20 and 31 August). The following products were alternated during consecutive spray applications to avoid the development of insect resistance: Agri-Mek, Fan Fare and Perm Up. Similarly, fungicides were applied throughout the growing season at weekly intervals. The fungicide program consisted of the following fungicide products being alternated during consecutive spray applications to avoid the development of disease resistance: Bravo, Kocide, Pristine, Penncozeb, Previcur Flex, and Ranman; and applied on the following dates; 11, 18, and 25 June; 2, 9, 16, and 28 July; and 6 and 14 August. Fusarium wilt was confirmed in this field trial through testing by Syngenta and Monsanto. Therefore, Pro-line was applied on 16 and 24 July 2015. This was the first case of Fusarium Wilt, race 2, being identified in the state of North Carolina (Quesada-Ocampo, personal communication).

There were six harvests. The first harvest was 16 July 2015. Subsequent harvests were 23 and 30 July; 6 and 26 August; 9 September. Each fruit was harvested when ripe, weighed and categorized statistically by size category. For the triploid watermelon test, fruits were placed in the following categories; <8.9 lb, 9.0-13.5 lb, 13.6-17.5 lb,17.6-21.4 lb, and 21.5+lb. Fruits were considered marketable if they weighed at least 9 pounds. Fruit are often commercially marketed by number or count per bin with 9-13.5 lb. fruit termed 60-count, 13.6-17.5 lb. fruit termed 45-count, 17.6-21.4 lb. fruit termed 36-count, and fruit 21.5 lb. or larger termed 30-count. We use these weight designations to categorize the fruits harvested in this study. The most popular standard triploid fruit size has typically ranged from 12-16 lb. Evaluations of each watermelon entry included yield, fruit size, production earliness, soluble solids using a hand held digital refractometer, fruit shape and size, exterior and interior descriptions (rind pattern, length/width ratio, seed trace size, occurrence of hard seeds, hollow heart incidence and severity, and flesh color), and interior flesh firmness. Hard seed in triploid fruit was determined according to USDA standards. Fruits were cut longitudinally in half, and then these halves were cut laterally. The number of hard seeds exposed on the cut surface were counted and recorded. This is the third year we have rated for hard seeds according to USDA standards. Fruits were cut longitudinally in half, and then these halves were cut laterally. The number of hard seeds exposed on the cut surface were counted and recorded. This is the third year we have rated for hard seeds according to USDA standards. Flesh firmness was taken by using a Penetrometer FT 011 with a 7/16” plunger tip, (QA Supplies LLC, Norfolk, Va.), and recorded in pounds. Samples were obtained by cutting the center of the fruit from the stem to blossom end. Pressure was then taken in five areas of the fruit; stem end, top side, ground spot side, blossom end, and center. Pressure was not taken on fruit with hollow heart. The reported measures on flesh firmness are an average of the five sample areas and are an average value taken for five fruit per plot or 20 fruit per cultigen. Most of the quality measurements were taken at the first or second harvests.

2015 Trial Note:

This trial was impacted by the occurrence of fusarium wilt, race 2 across the entire field. Although Pro-line was applied twice to control fusarium wilt, many of the watermelon entries were substantially impacted by the disease with the loss of nearly one-half of the plot’s foliage, resulting in significant yield reductions. Some of the entries most affected were from Seminis Seed Company (SV 0241, SV 2757, and SV 7018) and Origene Seeds (Talca, Maxima). The Pro-line will be applied as a preventative treatment in 2016 as it was not applied until some wilting of the plants was observed in the 2015 trial. The late application thus may have been more impactful of the entries listed above.

Yields were average, considering there were six harvests. The loss of foliage to fusarium wilt disease, along with excessive heat during fruit set likely relegated yields to being mostly average.

Financial Support

In addition to seed companies, this research was supported by the College of Life and Agricultural Sciences, North Carolina Agricultural Research, and the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.
