We’re celebrating this month! March is recognized as Living Well Month and National Nutrition Month. Both of these are close to my heart. Bear with me as I shout out about, support, and recognize these special celebrations!

Living Well Month is promoted each year by the Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences both at the national level and here in North Carolina. These are the professional organizations for those who work in the areas of Family and Consumer Sciences for the Cooperative Extension Service. I, personally, have been a member for over 40 years.

“Raising kids, eating right, spending smart, living well”—is the theme for Living Well Month. Our goal as Extension Family Consumer Science professionals is to provide people with the education and information they need in order to “live well.” This is what those of us who work for Cooperative Extension have been doing for over 100 years.

Many people don’t fully understand who we are and what we do. Cooperative Extension’s Family and Consumer Science (FCS) professionals are part of a nationwide educational system funded through the Land Grant Universities and the United States Department of Agriculture. There are two land grant institutions here in North Carolina – North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University. Researchers and specialists at both universities support us in “extending” or helping to bring the teaching and research-based information from the universities to the residents of Brunswick County—where it can be used to help families “live well.”

Here in Brunswick County our Family and Consumer Science team is led by Meghan Lassiter, our FCS Extension Agent. She works with many local organizations and groups to teach nutrition, cooking, and healthy lifestyles. Angie Lawrence is a Program Associate with the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program. She teaches nutrition and health to both youth and adults. I work with food safety and the Master Food Volunteer Program. Many of our programs focus on eating right and spending smart….all part of Living Well. You can find out more about our offerings and check out our many YouTube videos by going to our website.

It is also National Nutrition Month. This nutrition and education campaign is celebrated annually by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. I have worked closely with members of this organization for many years and admire and respect them and the work they do. They have celebrated nutrition month since 1980.

The theme for this year’s National Nutrition Month is “Personalize Your Plate.” The idea here is that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to nutrition and health. Everyone has a unique body, goals, background, needs, and taste. A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist can help you develop a healthy eating plan especially if you have nutritional needs based on a health problem. They have some great information on their website on nutrition, food, health, and fitness…not just this month but year round. Check them out at Eat Right.

Please join me in celebrating this special month by learning more about what Extension Family and Consumer Sciences and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics have to offer. Both organizations help us as FCS professionals and the families here in Brunswick County LIVE WELL.
